Dr. Urquhart practices general orthopaedics with special interests in joint replacement, hip and knee surgery, and in children’s orthopaedics. He was one of the first in Houston to apply Ilizarov leg lengthening techniques to the care of complex fractures.
In 1963, Dr. Urquhart received his B.S. from Princeton University. In 1968, he received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. After serving 2 years in the the U.S. Navy as a Medical Officer in 1969–1971, he returned to Texas for residency training in orthopaedics at the University of Texas Health Science Center, 1971-1975. Since 1975, he has practiced orthopaedics and held leadership positions on the staffs of St. Joseph Hospital, Hermann Hospital and the Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children.
Dr. Urquhart is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has served as an Examiner for the Board since 1983. He has served as the Chief of Staff and is presently the Academic Chief of the Orthopaedic Department at St. Joseph Hospital. He is active in the orthopaedic residency teaching program of the University of Texas Medical School where he holds an appointment of Associate Clinical Professor.
Dr. Urquhart is a past president of both the Houston Orthopaedic Society and the Texas Orthopaedic Association. In 1999, Dr. Urquhart was honored as a distinguished surgeon by the Houston Area Operating Nurses Association. He holds memberships in numerous medical and orthopaedic societies and remains active in teaching in his field of interest.
